Microchipping is now compulsory for all dog owners in the UK.
Get your dog microchipped and have the assurance that should he become lost (or be stolen), he is more likely to be returned to you safe and sound. Although its law that dogs have to microchipped it isnt that they have to be scanned, this is however normal practice with dogs that are found.
The Idea behind microchipping - welfare benefits, including:
puppies can be traced to their breeder (with puppies needing to be microchipped by 8 weeks of age). Breeders have to be the first keeper of the puppy on their records.
Deterrent to dog theft
lost dogs can be returned quicker and easier. Helping with frequent runaways and reinforce the responsibilities of the owners under the Animal Welfare Act 2006
Easier identification and subsequent arrests of owners culpable of animal cruelty (although many will ignore this law)
Enables veterinary surgeons to contact dog owners for emergency procedures
Allows identification of dogs in properties in emergency situations so that dogs and owners can be moved and reunited more quickly
MAKE SURE YOU UPDATE DETAILS
Life gets busy, fact. But there are alot of potential consequences
invalidating insurance - Maisie's just went down by £60 on her insurance because we moved (woo win) however the cost of having her addressed at the wrong place is potentially massive.
Yes, you may have to pay a fee every time you amend your contact details to the database. but its worth it!
